Hypoglycemia
Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is a common problem in small breed puppies.  Puppies in general do not have the fat (energy) stored that adults do.  Smaller breeds have a greater disadvantage because of the higher metabolic rate and energy requirement per body mass.  This means that whatever stores they do have is used very quickly.
Signs of hypoglycemia weakness, lethargy, unsteady walking, decreased food intake, twitching, tremors, seizures, and even coma.  Hypoglycemia can be fatal if left untreated.
Hypoglycemia is treatable but most importantly preventable.  Puppies need to eat very often and kept warm.  It is best to leave fresh food and water out at all times.  Make sure you actually see your puppy eat.  Puppies can get cold before humans feel cold.  Make sure to check your puppies temperature.  Feel his ears, if they are cold then the puppy is cold.
If there are signs of hypoglycemia we recommend Nutri-Cal and getting your puppy to the veterinarian.
